Each year, The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids sponsors Kick Butts Day, a day of activism that empowers youth to take action against tobacco use at more than 2,000 events from coast to coast. This year, Kick Butts Day will take place on March 24, 2010.
To recognize this event, the Quit Doc Research and Education Foundation partnered with WSTU-AM and WPSL-AM to sponsor a youth contest to create anti-tobacco Public Service Announcements.
The contest was open to all Middle School and High School students in Martin County. Students submitted rough recordings or scripts for 30-second anti-tobacco radio spots. Local radio station personalities and tobacco control experts selected four finalists. The finalists were then ranked by the Tampa Bay Ray television and radio broadcasters.
On March 23, 2010, the finalists participated in a one-hour interview of the Coach's Corner radio program, which airs weekly on WSTU-AM 1450 in Stuart. The shows host, Coach Rick MacGuire, announced the winners as selected by the Rays brodcast teams live on the air. The winning entries were also played during the show. The winners included:
